The PDF document User- and Owner-Password
The standard security provided by Acobat PDF documents consists of two different passwords:
The "Owner"-Password (permission Password) allows to prevent PDF files from printing, editing (changing), selecting text and graphics, or adding/changing annotations and form fields.
The "User"-Password locks the document so the password is required to open and view the file.
If only the "Owner"-password is set, decryption is being done instantly, the decrypted file can be opened in any PDF viewer (e.g. Adobe Acrobat Reader). But the applied document restrictions can not be changed without the Owner Password.
When should you use this PDF Encryption Setting?
If you want to prevent the illegitimate opening of the document and/or if you want to avoid any unauthorized changes within your document to guarantee the authenticity. This setting is for you:
- individual "Open"-Password (User password) supplied - if you do not enter an "Open"-password the document will be encrypted and can be opened in any PDF viewer, but the applied restrictions are not changeable.
- individual "Owner"-Password (Permission password) supplied - access restrictions can only be changed with the permission password
- Document compatibility with Adobe Acrobat 5.0 or later
- Strong 128-Bit RC4 document encryption
- All included Meta-Data is encrypted
- Copy of any document content is forbidden
- Printig in high resolution is enabled
